Value of the Cooperative: Feeding the Future of UFC

Jun 30, 2020

Earlier this month restaurants, retailers and other businesses across the state began "turning the dial" in preparation for their long anticipated re-opening. While these businesses were at a standstill our farmers, producers and employees throughout UFC country have been hard at work tending to the many responsibilities that come along with spring. COVID-19 has presented many challenges, but with every challenge comes the opportunity to observe, learn and grow.

A key observation I have made is that COVID-19 has brought into sharp focus how “essential” agriculture is for our nation. Everyone in the agriculture industry has understood this all along, but sadly it has taken something as tragic as a pandemic and massive shifts within daily routines for the rest of the nation to realize this. Today, tomorrow and in the far future, agriculture will remain essential; that will not change. From this observation I’ve learned we must always be vigilant and proactively thinking about what the future of agriculture looks like in order to remain competitive, relevant and profitable. Fortunately, we are better equipped for success than others given our business model.

You, as a member-owner, play an integral role in ensuring UFC is well positioned for success today, tomorrow and for future generations no matter what the circumstances. The equity you receive as a member-owner of UFC, in addition to your patronage of products and services, is feeding the future of UFC. Your equity is enabling us to reinvest in the cooperative and make strategic decisions that allow us to continue strengthening our core departments so we can better serve you and future generations to come.

This is your cooperative, and we are truly in this together. I wish you all the best as you continue through the season, and look forward to continuing our partnership.
